Thanks to the proliferation of bootcamp programs across the country and online, pivoting to a tech career has never been easier. These courses, teaching a range of specialized skills in coding, data science, cybersecurity and more, offer students an efficient route to a promising new career. In just a few months or less, these programs equip participants with job critical skills, interview and career prep and the ability to network with industry experts.

Despite serving as a more affordable alternative to four-year degree programs, bootcamps can still command a hefty tuition, with some full-time in-person programs costing up to $12,000. Since these programs are not accredited institutions, participants are also not eligible for Pell Grants or state loans.

Despite the situation, bootcamps recognize that costs can be high, and combat that issue through numerous innovative finance solutions. Some schools offer an income-share agreement or otherwise defer tuition so payment is not due until you’re on the job in the field of your choosing. Others offer full or partial scholarships to students from all walks of life, in addition to need-based grants and funding for groups traditionally underrepresented in tech. Finally, some non-profit organizations offer coding education completely free of charge.

Below, we’ve compiled a list of scholarship opportunities offered by bootcamps across all the categories you can find on codingbootcamps.io. For your convenience, we’ve broken down these offerings by compiling some of the most popular non-profit bootcamps, as well as listing out scholarship opportunities by school and target recipient. Be sure to browse our listings to learn more about each of these programs!

Nonprofit and/or Free Coding Bootcamps

Ada Developers Academy

This in-person program in Seattle, WA is completely free and prioritizes serving women, non-binary, Black, Latinx, Indigenous American, Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander and LGBTQIA+ and low-income people. A six-month full-time instructional period is followed by a five month paid tech internship. Students are, however, responsible for covering their living costs. Ada Academy’s curriculum focuses on programming languages like Ruby, HTML/CSS, and JavaScript.

Recurse Center

Recurse Center is not a bootcamp, as they state on their website, but instead a self-directed educational retreat for programmers. In one, six or 12 weeks, people with programming backgrounds complete coding projects and upskill their knowledge in this NYC-based program, with career services available upon completion from Recurse for those looking for a new job. The retreat is completely free with grants available for participants who require assistance covering housing costs.

App Academy Open

For students looking to complete training online, this program provides free full access to all of App Academy’s Full Stack web development curriculum. While you won’t receive instructor-led learning that comes with the paid program, you will get over 1,500 hours of learning material from a top-rated bootcamp program. The free tier material is identical to the in-person course and contains App Academy’s interactive coding environment and community chat access.

General Assembly Dash

Another free spinoff of a highly rated bootcamp school, General Assembly’s Dash program is an online project-based course for web development beginners. Participants will learn site design in HTML5, create a fully styled landing page in CSS3 and master dynamic interfaces in Javascript. The course can be completed on your own cadence, and prepares students interested in going further with General Assembly’s immersive paid bootcamp programs.

Skillcrush Free Coding Bootcamp

Skillcrush is a major provider in online courses in coding, design and user experience. Their free base course is self-paced and covers the basics of HTML & CSS, web and UX design, WordPress and the tech industry. This is a great option for beginners, as the program requires no technical background, with options to complete additional courses to enhance your knowledge.
